Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
5.0
Wow. When is the second book coming out?
I had heard many of my favorite authors talk of how good this was when it came out last year. I finally got around to reading it and I agree with them. The first chapter is ROUGH to read, very painful and personal and a bit too horror-tinged for me. The book changes course after that and doesn't get quite so gross again. I quickly fell in love with Xiala, the woman who can magically sing a degree of control over the waves. I would read a prequel and side stories about her adventures. Serapio, a young man who is driven by a fierce destiny, grew on me much more slowly. I still don't know if I like him, but I slowly found myself hoping that he can accomplish his goal, even as I fear what will happen when he does. I chalk that up to the skill of Roanhorse's writing. We also have political intrigue in the great city of Tova, which is a great way to get me interested, and the intrigue is done pretty well. I think I will be moving book 2 to the top of my TBR when it comes out, and not only because of the cliffhanger ending.
