I loved this book! I’ve written many novels by Kate Quinn so I knew I would love it from the get go. And now I have a new-to-me author backlist to check out — Janie Chang’s. I paired the physical copy with the audio, and I loved the narration of both main characters.

I am completely fascinated by historical natural disasters, especially those I don’t have much knowledge of or when its paired with the strength of women who are breaking glass ceilings — the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and the women of this story were no different.

Alice Eastwood is an independent  female botanist who is obsessed with a particular flower that only blooms at night. And I have to admit, I found myself even more intrigued by her story than even the main characters. I hope to see a future novel about her from either of these authors.
