We experience the story through the main character’s journal entries, who lives in a gigantic labyrinth with walls lined with statues. This seems to encompass the whole world to our narrator, who believes there is only one other living person, but he soon discovers signs that this may not be the case. What unravels is an investigation into just what is going on. “Piranesi” is both a mystery and a puzzle, a la Borges, who acts as inspiration for Clarke’s labyrinth. It’s a fast read, yet Clarke is still able to elicit the otherworldly labyrinth your mind’s eye as well as provide depth to the handful of characters present in the tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and would recommend it to anyone. I think it also makes for a good introduction to the Sci-fi genre, showing that the genre is more than aliens and spaceships, etc.
