Etched in Clay: The Life of Dave, Enslaved Potter and Poet by Andrea Cheng
4.0
A biography-in-poems of an enslaved man auctioned in Augusta, Georgia in the 1800s. He would become a potter and then achieve reading/writing English proficiency at a time when such rights were alienable if you were Black and living in South Carolina. Cheng passed away some years ago, but her genre-bending work lives on; can be purchased alongside the traveling exhibition Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina, which features a handful of ceramics onto which Dave etched his name, poems, and other then-illicitly-disseminated works.
