Her Majesty's Royal Coven by Juno Dawson

2.0

I was so keen to read this book after seeing glowing reviews online and coming across it so many times in bookstores near me. So I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook and unfortunately I really didn't enjoy the audiobook experience (sorry Nicola Coughlan!). I think it would have benefited from a full cast because for at least 5-6 hours of audio, up to approximately 40%, I was very confused by the POVs and a more distinct voice for each would have improved the audio. I have also seen that people reading the physical copy even found the characters too similar to differentiate who is who, so perhaps the characters needed further personal development.
I'm also gutted that Theo didn't get a POV. In my opinion Theo was too central of a character to not get their own POV and this would have given direct insight into their thoughts and feelings.
I was also shocked to see that this was nearly 14 hours of audio, yet only 464 pages, it felt like an absolute age to get through it (a month for me!). I feel like it was far too long with not enough plot to carry it through.
The political aspects were good but unexplored fully, I was left pretty disappointed with HMRC.
I won't be continuing on with the series I'm sad to say but hopefully this book finds its way into the right readers hands.
