A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes
5.0
Reread this for my thesis. It's a fantastic work of art! I am in awe at the way it is written and the way in which Haynes retells the Trojan war from its earliest beginning to its latest end. This is not as narratively driven as other retellings, such as The Silence of the Girls, but it offers a brutal insight into the lives of all the women affected by the war, from the more memorable Hecabe, Briseis, and Penelope, to the lesser known Laodamia, Oenone, and Penthesilea. Haynes draws on a plethora of sources, not just the ones by Homer, which accounts for how much there is to learn from this retelling. I can't recommend it enough!
