Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

5.0

I've read a handful of books that have touched me on a personal level. Made me cry, laugh, and feel proud, but none of them have I connected more with than Queenie. I didn't know how relateable the character would be. It felt like someone had taken the last two years of my life and written about them in detail. I would like to say that the level of things that happened to Queenie, I'm not going to spoil but they were extreme, did not happen to me, but similar circumstances happened that I could latch on to the story and root for her and empathize with her. I cried at how supportive her friends were. I rolled my eyes and felt frustration when I noticed similarities to her friends and mine. I felt really good reading this book, and I think that other people who have shared experiences as Queenie could feel the same way. This book was very realistic for me, and especially for a young adult female. At times it could seem a little over dramatic, but that is honestly just a natural reaction from someone going through such abrupt and shocking personal circumstances. I plan on loaning this book to my friends as some of the characters reminded me of them. I think this is a book that I will continue to share physically if not vocally. Candice Carty-Williams did a fabulous job with her debut novel. I can't wait to read more from her. #IAMQUEENIE.
