Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

2.0

This anthology collection is as eclectic as it claims, weaving a narrative of surrealism and feminism. Each story had something to do with women and how they’ve been treated, with a good mix of dystopian and horror elements.

The reality of this collection, for me, is that it went over my head. The first story, about a looming apocalypse told through sexual endeavours, was intriguing. It felt like a really innovative way to tell an apocalyptic story, whilst having some important messages about the strength of women. However, it went a bit downhill for me, from here.

Ultimately, the writing style became so experimental, I didn’t understand what was going on. I became confused and unsure, which led me to be disinterested and bored. I fully respect the creativity that went into this collection. But, when a whole short story is based on ‘Law and Order: SVU’, a show I haven’t watched, the impact didn’t land and it dragged on.

I will not be surprised if this is a novel for the wacky and weird book lovers out there. It has definitely expanded my reading experience and I love it for that. There are a bunch of trigger warnings for this book though, so please do check before you dive in. The ones I can think of are misogyny, rape, child abuse, domestic violence, abortion, miscarriage, emesis/blood/gore. There are also explicit sex scenes and other sexual content, so I would say R16+.
