The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown
mysterious
slow-paced
3.5
"The Book of Doors" takes readers on a journey that starts off slow but gradually picks up steam. The writing is nice and borderline nostalgic, and the story is clever if not somewhat filled with tropes. If you can connect with the characters and forgive the direction some of the characters are directed into, it does have a very satisfying ending after the not-bad climax.
When the book focused on Cassie's relationships with her Grandfather and one particular other older character, the book shines and the writing sweeps you up into the dynamics that she shares with them, which just made the ending worth the read for me. The action likewise when it happens is brutal but well-written!
I just really dislike the fake-out deaths, and it happening twice in a very similar fashion? It just broke down any tension the book had built up for me, personally.
