When the Moon Was Ours is a book that I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for a book full of magic and wonder. When the Moon Was Ours is enchanting and captivating from the very first page. The writing is flowery and lyrical and the atmosphere is akin to a fairy tale which makes this a beautiful read.
The characters are a major positive for When the Moon Was Ours. It is not just their uniqueness and mystical aspects that makes them compelling – Meil has roses growing from her wrists and Sam paints Moons and hangs them all across town - but both Sam and Meil are so vividly developed and complex with layers upon layers of character development and secrets throughout the novel. Both have great narrative voices which make them a joy to read.
At the heart of this book there is a love story between Meil and Sam and it’s a beautiful one at that. It was first and foremost a friendship that developed into a romantic relationship. They are supportive and protective of each other. A truly heart-warming love story.
When the Moon Was Ours is also a great #ownvoices book. Meil is a Latina MC in love with Sam, a Pakistani transgender boy, and When the Moon Was Ours is an all-round great diverse and magical read.
Overall, a fantastic story full of cultural and lgbtqia+ diversity and magic and if WHEN THE MOON WAS OURS isn’t on your TBR list, I recommend you put it on there ASAP.
