Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling
5.0
Before i get into the actual review, let me just say that the Audiobook read by Stephen Fry is fantastically done! And even if you are not a typical audiobook listener -which i am not i only started recently and i still have a hard time with them but this one was so easy and wonderful to listen to!- i highly recommend it!
______
This book is always so hard for me!
Because i love it!
It brings so much to the overall plot of the story, so much is happening, we learn so much and Harry, Hermoine and Ron are clearly not children anymore and at the same time its so clear that they are so in over their heads with all that is happening.
I keep wanting to hug Hermione because of her frustrations with Harry and his usage of unknown magic when they all know that its such a bad idea and she just wants him to be more careful and he is so stubbornly ignoring her!
and at the same time i always have to grin when ever Harry does use it and is so happy if what ever he does works in his favour.
I love/hate how the relationship between Ron and Hermione chances and i always, always adore Harry and Ginny's moments in this book.
I also love that this book doesn't just focus on the bad, but it shows how hard Harry works as a Captain of his Quidditch team, how hard some students make just being in school make it, simply because they think they are so much more important then they actually are.
It's just so refreshing and makes this book so realistic because even if everyone knows that a war is coming, you still have to live through the typical everyday and enjoy and not enjoy the typical moments that come with that. And this book has this perfect balance of making it clear that everyone knows that dark times are coming -especially with all the dark moments this book has added in- but it also shows those lighter moments. Rowling is just a master in balancing light and dark!
Draco... i just want to hug that boy throughout this entire book!
I was never one of those people that thought that Draco was secretly a good guy and just misunderstood or that he was actually secretly in love with Hermione... if you think that great, i don't. But i still think that he is such a wonderful character and especially in this book it really shows how fantastic Rowling manages to write those dark characters that are not just evil, but have all those layers and issues going on in their lives that might make them behave horrendously. Not because that makes it okay, but just given a little reasoning, an added layer to why they are behaving as they are. Which i just love.
Also draco is just a fantastic character in general and i always thought he brings so much humanity into the books!
But at the same time throughout this entire book i keep wanting to shake and slap Albus Dumbledore because he is just so frustrating!
I hate how he treated Harry as if he is a complete child that you can not tell anything important to, while at the same time he clearly stacks so much on Harry's shoulders without actually telling the boy what the heck Dumbledore expects of him.
He could have shared all his knowledge, let him know so much more that i am sure would have helped Harry in the future where Dumbledore knew that he wasn't alive for! so why didn't he?
Why focus on memories and moments that might have been important but honestly in the end? were no use at all because Dumbledore could have just told harry all that once Dumbledore himself figured it out and gave Harry a short summary of it all. I am pretty sure harry would't have sat there and told Dumbledore that he didn't believe a word Dumbledore told him about Riddle without all the memory watching...
It just frustrates me, clearly. Sorry about the ramble.
Also Snape.... lets just say GRRRRRRRRRR and leave it at that because that guy is just so frustrating and i can not understand after everything he does and doesn't do in this book especially how anybody can even think about making him a hero. He is not! He just isn't!
Everything he does he does it knowing what the end result is and there is nothing that could make what he did okay.
He is a horrible teacher and one of the biggest bullies in existence and dumbledore is almost as bad because he lets this horrendous person teach innocent children and looks on while they are being tutored and bullied and talked down on.
Another ramble i did not intent to get into, once again sorry but i have FEELINGS!
And i might be one of the very, very few people that actually thought that the death in this book is one of the most understandable and perfectly timed ones in this entire series and i completely understand why it had to happen and have no issues with it. DON'T KILL ME!
I love this book but it is also so frustrating in so many moments!
Its a great book in the series and i love it and have lots and lots of thoughts and feelings which is the best thing that can happen, right?
