I was meant to publish this review on release day, but it's always painful when you're hopeful about a book and then discover it does not suit you. I was eager to read about vampires who lived through extraordinary historical events, and I liked the idea of an academic struggling to come to terms with the existence of creatures she's considered legends.
The biggest stumbling block from the beginning was how Dominic came across. Instead of a dark, sexy hero, he came across like a wise, old man. Yes, he is wise, and he is old, but when writing vampire heroes, you need to portray them as experienced but still as youthful as the day they "died". At best, I could see Dominic being like Ned Stark. Instead of a hot vampire romance, Dominic initially came across as creepy old man lusting over a much younger woman.
In the end, I couldn't get into the writing style. It was almost like the words and were dancing to two slightly different rhythms, always a half-step out of sync. At 25%, I decided to hang up the towel, acknowledging that this book wasn't for me.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
