The Last Week by John Dominic Crossan, Marcus J. Borg
informative
inspiring
slow-paced
3.5
I'd read the First Christmas book by the same authors, and I think gotten a little more out of that, but this was still really good. The "gospels" in the title is honestly mostly Mark, though how other gospels and accounts in the epistles differ from Mark comes up where relevant. Borg and Crossan go through the story from Palm Sunday to Easter, covering the events of each day, and how they fit into the story Mark's trying to tell, with a lot of focus on story structure and symbolism. I think some of the stories are a little more open to interpretation than the authors allow, but if you're looking for a solid framework on which to hang your understanding of Holy Week, I think this is the place to start.
As always, I appreciate Crossan and Borg's focus on anti-imperialism and non-violent social justice in Jesus's ministry, as well as pointing how the text has been used against Jews over the centuries, and underlining how that is not the original meaning, and shouldn't be the current takeaway either.
