A Paradise of Illusions by Laurie Hashim

4.0

The title of this book was the one that attracted me first. Such an intriguing title. I felt it was an apt one as well as I finished the book.

The story is set around the 1920s-1960s era with the Malayan backdrop. Hence, expect the Japanese invasion and World War II incorporation. However, the author had just included perhaps bits and pieces of them; which fits perfectly to the storyline.

I loved the way the author intertwines mixed marriages and culture. It was flavourful and refreshing. It also gave me a glimpse of Malaya back then.

When it comes to the characters, I particularly had sort of love-hate relationship with Anna. She is a fierce and independent woman but after some time succumbs to the traditional roles that is expected from her. I was expecting her to be more challenging and non traditional. Nevertheless, I enjoyed admiring, being amused and at other times being frustrated with her.
