I was braced for a scarier beginning - puppets waking up in the attic being pretty standard nightmare fuel -, but that horror was never really developed.

It took a while to get going, but at some point the book flipped from mildly entertaining 80s B-movie, to wildly entertaining 80s Jim Henson Production. I cried at the end.
