I have been struggling with reading lately because of stress and everything I have on my plate - but when I received this book - I literally could not put it down. Maybe it is because I was stuck in an MLM for many years, or that a past friend of mine recently appeared suspiciously in my life. But I related to Drew and the circumstances of her life, and that lens kept me fully engaged in the novel.
The most fun parts about the book were the added elements - like blog articles, texts, sample catalogue pages for the items that LuminUS - the MLM - offers, etc. It had a deep edge of dread throughout, which is why I can't really call it a "cozy" mystery, and the added creepiness paired with mystery elements were right down my alley.
The story follows Drew, who is "down on her luck," and reunites with her former best friend - Steph - who just so happens to be a star seller with LuminUS - a promising "job" opportunity. This leads Drew into the seedy world of MLMs and the glamorous lives they promise - but only a few lead - and even they have their catches. The MLM in the book reminded me a lot of the LuLaRoe scandal (watch the documentary on Amazon, it's crazy), and the critique of MLMs as well as highlighting how they make sellers feel like they belong - was interesting to hear. I did not realize how scary LuminUS would end up being until the end of the book, and it felt like a modernized Agatha Christie novel.
If you love light horror and mystery, I think that Death in the Downline would be perfect for you. It is an inventive and fun read through and through.
