I was worried that I wouldn't be able to follow it if it had a lot of the text in Cree, but there was a glossary in the back, and a lot of non-English made sense in context, plus I learned a bit as I went. I think John-Kehewin's mixing of languages really added power to several of the poems, especially one that repeated several times across the middle section, the first time in Cree syllabics, the second Cree in Latin script, the third in English. The poems focus on intergenerational trauma, trying to raise kids in a culture you're trying to learn yourself, displacement and alienation, the weight of history. The whole collection is heavy stuff, but the power of the poetry remains. The first poem, and the one with punctuation written out, especially. Could have used less fat shaming.
