Waking Olivia by Elizabeth O'Roark

2.0

honestly, I only finished this book because the chances I'll find another sport romance about a (sleep) runner and her coach former climber are pretty much inexistent. everything else screams generic tho. even the coach/athlete relationship stays far away from remarkable since we barely get to see him actually coaching her (or anyone else on the team) beyond the endless scolding (bc she's unbelievably attractive, with all the curves of a skeleton, and he can't let her know how much it affects him. you know, the usual). the heavy dose of mystery is exciting in the beginning, but soon proves to be just a way of masking the mc's natural perfection. I guess you can't accuse an author of not creating or exploring real flaws in their characters if said characters have nightmares about some big repressed traumas that make them unconsciously run for the whole night before every competition.

what disappointed me the most, however, was that this book could've been an age gap sport romance without the far-fetched childhood, like Birthday Girl on the run or something. in fact, when she first met the runners' coaches I could swear her love interest would be the one she already looked up to. now that's a slow burn I would pay to read.
