Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story by Ben Carson

emotional hopeful informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

2.5

I enjoyed a lot of the material covered, but there were a lot of things that I disliked. The way it was written was meant to be accessible for anyone and I appreciate the efforts, but it led to the book being choppy and almost too simple. Each story and chapter did not flow smoothly with the content next to it and within it. Many subjects covered in the book also seemed glamourized or idealized. The book seems to present a message that "although it is harder for lower-class Black people to be successful, it is also their fault if they can't succeed to this level" and gave off very "Model Minority" vibes. Maybe that isn't the best way to explain it but something about the book just felt off. I did really enjoy how inspiring the book was and how it showed not just the highs but also the lows of being a surgeon and the strain that can put in a family.
