“The fucking shit will find a way. The fucking shit has been finding one for years.”

Oh Roland, bless your poor hardened heart. Is this about to be another totally biased review where I gush about the Dark Tower series? Without a doubt. Will I give every book in this series five stars on this reread? Eh, we’ll see, but we’re two for two so far.

I’ve mentioned before, the first time I read this series I didn’t review each book individually. I think of the series as a whole which is a nice way to sneak it into my top ten King books. After rereading The Gunslinger though, I couldn’t help but share how much I loved it, and here I am again.

The Drawing of the Three picks up right where The Gunslinger left off; with Roland on a beach. No surprise though, this is no relaxing vacation. The action starts right away with one of the most memorable scenes from the entire series. It’s gruesome, vivid, totally wild, and a perfect introduction for the ride the drawing takes you on. “Did-a-chum?”🦞

The set up of this book is done incredibly well. While some questions are raised, there’s a definite feeling of excitement that amps up with every chapter. Each section is well-defined and entertaining throughout, and we get to meet a couple of characters that are vital to Roland’s quest.
•
Eddie Dean is one of the best characters King has ever created. Knowing what this journey leads to only makes me love him more; he is redemption personified. As much as the opening scene of this book sticks with me, the chapters where we meet Eddie are my favorite. The gunfight is freaking EPIC! Eddie’s relationship with Roland brings a lot of humor, which I love, but it’s also what brought tears to my eyes🥺
•
Odetta/Detta is hilarious, a badass, and scary as hell. Naturally she’s a perfect fit for the ka tet. The last section of The Drawing of the Three is such a cool ending, particularly for first time readers seeing everything come together.
•
While The Gunslinger has it’s faults and is better made for a reread, The Drawing of the Three is pure perfection for any read; there isn’t a wasted word. It’s filled with action, adventure, humor, and heart. It has time travel in a way I’ve never seen before and it was so fucking cool. I loved seeing Roland learning our language, it added some levity to some very serious situations, and did I mention Eddie Dean?🖤
