A collection of interconnected creepy stories involving serial killers in a Japanese town. It’s hard to tell what age these stories are written for as the style mainly seems to be written for the 12-15 age range, but the stories themselves are actually quite unsettling and often seem too scary for teens. Apparently, the author was only twenty-three when he wrote the book and perhaps that’s part of it. The result can be off-putting, some creepy tales about murderous obsessions, self-harm and suicide, and (in one tale) pet murder; but written in a simple, almost fairytale-like prose. The book seemed much longer for me, as some of the stories seemed drawn out. But there’s something I really liked about it, that’s it’s a scary kids book that’s too scary for kids. Some of the psychological horror is executed well and I look forward to reading more books by the author but there are times when it was a little bit of a struggle. This ebook version includes the additional story Morino’s Souvenir Photo which makes a satisfying end.
