Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

I'm sorry, I feel like a cranky rater lately. I was really excited to read this but I'd hoped for more. The miscommunication trope keeps this story...'afloat' for the last three quarters of the book, and it started to feel incredibly dragged out and frustrating.

It IS easy to care about the octopus, but I wish the author had made the human characters a little more compelling since that is who we spend most of our time with. If we're talking about enjoying some good old-fashioned anthropomorphizing, may I use this opportunity to again shamelessly plug my favorite book that I think is criminally underrated. Come Thou Tortoise by Jessica Grant is a fantastic book with wise animal POVs, great humor, and seriously loveable characters.

I did love Marcellus the Octopus and his relationship with our protagonist, but I quickly became impatient waiting for the characters to CATCH UP ALREADY to what the octopus and the reader already knows.
