Castles in their Bones by Laura Sebastian
3.0
This book had everything I love; Smart, capable badass fmcs, politics, espionage. All of it. I should have swooned. I should have been over the moon in love with this book, but I just wasn't. I can't even tell you why. There was nothing I inherently disliked about it. I enjoyed all of the characters. They all had such unique personalities that I had no issue keeping them all straight; I never confused one person for another. It was well done.
There were just never any fireworks for me. It felt a little bit immature. The sisters were raised to be these canoeing girls that are stealing three thrones, but really, they're just kids with some messy seduction and the ability to code secret messages to each other.
I also felt like I kind of knew where the story was going. At no point was I sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop. For me, the plot just moved along at the same pace from start to finish without any huge heart-wrenching moments. That's probably where I struggled the most. While I liked the characters and the plot, there was no love. I was never emotionally involved with this story, and so I kind of just moved through it until it was over.
