The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst

4.0

This is a great example (if a bit heavy-handed) of foreshadowing and symbolism. Also a clear example of ableism. A difficult read emotionally throughout. The language and description are so spot on in creating a setting, I feel like I could pinpoint it on a map.

Teaching notes: I read this aloud, sharing time with a capable reader in about 25 minutes. In the future I would read it over 2 class periods to allow time for discussion as it unfolds. Students should discuss point of view before reading. It should be explicitly stated that it is written from the POV of a young boy and that the opinions on disability are his own and not mature or empathetic. That discussion should be prompted after the book is read as well.
