Honestly, this is one pf the best historic books I’ve ever read. To Hell and Back is not a work of research, but a work of story. Kershaw readily admits as much. With the exception of his own work on World War II, he is reliant on secondary sources.
So in this incredibly readable book, Kershaw translates all those facts into a narrative that is engaging and informative. This is no small task, and Kershaw has accomplished it perfectly.
I’m currently reading part two and I can’t get enough.
