An enemies to lovers Romantasy that actually gave enemies to lovers vibes? FINALLY!

I feel like it has been a hot minute since a book delivered on the E2L trope it promised instead of serving rivals/dislike to lovers at best, and the fact this is a standalone and I didn't have to read a minimum of three books for a well rounded and satisfying story is just the icing on the cake for me. Don't get me wrong I love a series, but sometimes I don't have the brain capacity to commit to one and this was a fun, engaging, spicy story that I had a great time listening to.

Mildred our half-fae/human FMC is betrothed to the cruel fae Prince Atakan from a young age to help secure the bonds between her farhers and Atakans fathers kingdoms whilst they unite their forces to defeat the unseelie king. There is genuine dislike for each other straight out the gate and we get glimpses of that escalating over time until Mildred reaches an certain age and has to go live in Atakans kingdom and ready herself for their impending marriage. Mildred is witty, cunning and doesn't back down from the games Atakan likes to play, these two push each other's buttons every step of the way and Atakan is a well written morally grey MMC who has you guessing his motives throughout and you are left wondering who to trust.

My only issue was I found the writing a bit jarring at times and it didn't flow as well as I hoped it was going to, there were times where one scene would follow another and I would feel like I had skipped pages or was missing information and the ending with the unseelie king also felt abrupt and rushed. Other than that, this was a solid, enjoyable, standalone romantasy. The audiobook was available to me with my Everand subscription and my first book narrated by Summer Roberts, and I really enjoyed her performance. It was also my first book by Ella Fields, and I will definitely be reading more from her in the future.

"What isn’t fair is your existence,” atakan seethed, his mouth leaving my forehead and moving closer to mine. “the way you make me crave and loathe you in equal measure."

"I want you. I want you as much as I loathe you—so much. It feels like I can’t breathe.” his parted lips dragged across my cheek, his whisper scathing near my ear. “give me back my fucking breath."

"you were mine.” his eyes returned to me, ablaze with the anger roughening his voice. “I knew then that I would rather remain trapped for eternity than let anyone think you’re theirs."
