The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Amazing

I laughed and cried so hard at this book. It’s sad that it’s message is still relevant years after the cases of Trayvon, Oscar, Philando, Eric, and now George and Brionna. I felt such a spark and pride in reading through Starr’s narrative. When I moved to Colorado with my family, to an all white school, I felt Starr’s predicament and rested in so many ways. The author captures the heart and soul of Starr’s life without sacrificing authenticity or throwing cheap stereotypical laughs. In a way the writing reminded me of classic black comedy movies at cookouts and barbecues. Real genuine stories.
Everything about this book was real and raw and I love the journey Starr takes. Especially when she finally uses her voice as the weapon it needs to be. A weapon for justice and for peace. The Hate U Give is incredibly, funny, raunchy, pit-turning, and it can make you cry. But it’s purpose is undoubted and it fits its title and why it came to be. The Hate U Give Little Infants Fs Everybody. And we, the next generation of activists and leaders, won’t stand for peace until our voices are heard
