Opal is aggressive, she’s unapologetically jaded and cunning, she steals and lies as a natural first response, even to herself. This is an example of an aggressive character that works in favour of selling her as a real character, rather than the caricature other books sadly fall into. In fact, across the board I would argue that the characters all feel so human, bar the odd antagonist that does their own job at being fun yet threatening.

There's one or two instances of miscommunication that at least are integrated into the characters' motivations and do serve a purpose to the plot. Would highly recommend to any mystery lovers who like a splash of haunted fantasy thrown into the mix, but might be hard to get into if small gothic towns aren't really settings that you can get into.
