House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas

2.0

Out of context HOFAS: Baxian having a friendly snack in the dungeons, my little pony, supermassive black hole but without the twilight baseball scene, Lidia serving cunt and saving this book all by herself, worms

I’m so mad at this book I can’t even begin to describe it (says me after hate-writing 500 words of a review running on 3 seconds of sleep and 7 coffees)

This book felt like everything else SJM has written before but in a different (worse) font. It was predictable and anticlimactic and the amount of info dumps we got in this irrationally long brick of a book was INSANE.

And look, I know SJM can weave a good story. She can make you feel like everything is finally coming together after following the characters for X books. But that wasn’t the case here. The plot was lazy and weak, and I can’t count how many times the characters miraculously found solutions for the problems they’ve had for centuries with very little to no effort.

The ending? A predictable disaster with yet another cheap shot at shocking the readers and making people cry with a 3-seconds death. Defeating the Asteri felt like… nothing happened.

The crossover? Sarah you’re gonna pay my therapy bills for having to read about Bryce running through some tunnels and chasing worms for god knows how many pages. Completely unnecessary and BORING.

Bryce herself was… well, her character “development” was a choice. A bad choice. She was selfish and bratty and acting like an Aelin wannabe with all that “not gonna tell you about my plans” and self-sacrificing bullshit. She’s about as interesting of a lead character as a bloody toaster. Her romance with Hunt was also boring and annoying in the way she treated him. Ew.

NOT TO MENTION THE POVs SWITCHING SO FREQUENTLY WITHIN ONE!!! CHAPTER THAT IT GAVE ME A HEADACHE THAT WILL LAST FOREVER.

What the hell was the point of Sigrid existence???? And Tharion’s little wife??? Flynn??? Why is this guy even there??? Why are all of those people there ENOUGH OF THIS ZOOTOPIA MADNESS.

Also the entire Orion prophecy Hunt heard from the Oracle was shit.

Things I liked: Lidia (Mother is Mothering MY BABY AELIN) and Ruhn. Also Hunt, surprisingly. Aidas and the Princes of Hel in general were cool and I’d read a book about them in a heartbeat.
