The Open Door: A Ghost Story for Christmas by Margaret Oliphant

3.0

"The Open Door" has a lot of spooky promise - the longest in Seth's Ghost Stories for Christmas series, it starts with a Colonel who moves his family to an old estate in Scotland, for the sake of his only son's health. On the grounds stand the ruins of an old house, where, unbeknownst to the family, eerie sounds and voices are heard each winter. The Colonel's son's encounters with what he believes is a spirit send him into a state of illness, and his father promises to ease the spirit's suffering to save his son. The descriptions are vivid and intricate, but overall it feels repetitive, like there are scenes and observations that could easily have been cut.
