Bourdain: The Definitive Oral Biography by Laurie Woolever
5.0
8h 22m/464 pages
More than 90 people were interviewed for this book. We have a tendency to exalt the dead and turn them into heroes. I appreciate that this book didn't do that. Tony wasn't a saint. He was a complicated guy who exhibited great strengths and deep flaws in pursuit of his passions. It was hard knowing how the story would end, but it was interesting to hear people address their POVs—how they didn't see it coming, how they DID see it coming but couldn't believe Tony was capable of suicide, how they saw something coming but didn't know how to approach him.
The audiobook is a great way to experience this book, but be aware that not everyone interviewed recorded their parts. There are a lot of voice actors who do a fine job instead.
