Roman Bath: A New History and Archaeology of Aquae Sulis by Peter Davenport
informative
fast-paced
5.0
This turned out to be exactly what I was looking for: a surprisingly breezy read that nonetheless describes at every step, fairly exhaustively, the archaeology of the site. Some interpretation is given, and things are presented in logical orders, but the whole picture is built carefully on the archaeology of the site.
It's probably better in hard copy, as it's very well illustrated with photos and diagrams.
I really flew through it, and should probably look up whether Davenport has written any other books like this, whether on specific sites or more general books. It can be a balancing act between information based on the actual evidence, learned guesswork, and an author's interpretation, and many authors stumble into pure flights of fantasy in order to keep the audience interested. Davenport had no need, at least for me!
