I have to admit, I was extremely close to dnf this book the moment I realised that we would have a love triangle (plucky girl, childhood best friend, cool adventurer). And I am still a bit annoyed by this plotline. And despite the book following a lot of the most common tropes and scenes found in YA fatnasy,  Heather Fawcett's writing still pulled me in. The bits that are special are really great. I especially loved the world and the exploring as well as all the travelling and mountaineering. I am looking forward to getting more information on the characters in the next book (Kamzin's sister especially, but I also want to know more about
River and the witches
