Red Rising by Pierce Brown
4.0
(listened as audiobook)
What's it about?
It's a science book set about 700 years in the future. Mars and other bodies of the solar system have been settled. Society is highly stratified, with castes defined by color. Golds are on the top, while Reds are miners and are the lowest.
The protagonist, Darrow, is a red, toiling away in a mine on Mars, never to see the surface. Until he is set on path of vengeance. He is groomed by a rebel organization to infiltrate Gold society and help topple it. To do so, Darrow joins the Academy, a proving ground for young Gold elite. Darrow faces some adversity, and then emerges from the Academy with much accolades, setting him on the path for future success and positioning to help the upcoming rebellion. This is the first in a series.
What did I think?
I really liked it. The narrator was great. The book was told from first person point of view, in present tense, which was interesting.
I've read other reviews saying that Darrow is Mary/Gary Stu, super smart, strong, cunning, etc.. That may be true, but didn't stop me from enjoying the book. Things are overwrought, but it's fun. It's more of a fantasy then a science fiction novel. Just a backdrop for fun romp, where the main character is the "Chosen One". Looking forward to reading the rest in the series.
