The Rumor by Lesley Kara

3.25

The format of this book was unfortunately its downfall, in a lot of little ways. The in between chapter italicized bits are confusing. Is this Sally's thoughts, or maybe her journal? Why are we seeing it when we do? It's also painfully obvious from a lot of the grammar and phrases that it was written by a British author attempting American accents. Also the "small town meets big graphic secret" usually grabs me but I think the contrast was too stark. It was like, okay, yes, Alfie is cute, lets please get to some plot. I don't know what I was expecting the ending to be, but it was NOT that.

All of that said, I did enjoy the double reveal. It's hard to find an ending that isn't ridiculously predicable but also isn't so impossible to predict that I can't pick up on clues in a reread. This book found that balance. The characters were also pretty likable, complex, and funny when they needed to be. I didn't hate this book by any means, it was a very quick and satisfying read, but as I said, there's a lot within the formatting and writing style that leaves something to be desired. At least for me.
