Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

2.0

devastated that this didn't work for me

things that were good:
‣ the world - as always, sanderson has the most unique concepts, his imagination is on another level
‣ very accessible/easy to read - sanderson has such a simple writing style, it make his work so easy to binge
‣ seeing the cosmere slowly expand, AH i’ve been waiting literal years for this

things that didn’t work for me (that’s not to say they won’t work for you)
‣ i was so bored the entire time. not a single part of this book felt engaging. i didn’t care for any of it
‣ the humour - i’ve said this many times before, but sanderson’s humour might just be the least funniest thing on the planet, for me. if you like the shallan / lift / syl type of humour (characters from stormlight), i think you’d love this. it comes across as too childish for my liking. although this novel is quite self-aware and conscious of how silly it is, it still didn't work for me

i also generally dislike nautical stories, and i’m not really a whimsical cozy fantasy reader, so in retrospect, this was doomed from the beginning lmao
