Am I shocked I enjoyed this as much as I did? Yep sure am! This story had sooo many layers that’s I’m afraid my squirrel brain will not do it justice.
Quick thoughts
- enjoyed the queer representation, I find in their books they make their characters’ queerness so seamless, as it should be. I’m not the biggest fan when it’s like ooo spot light on the “different”, no just give me a story and let the characters be who they are and this story gives you so many different outlooks on what queer can look like, very refreshing
- the concept of Pet I really enjoyed, that inner battle of good vs evil, right from wrong, how human emotions can cause incorrect decisions to be made
- loved the friendship between Jam and Redemption, it never came off as romantic and I just loved seeing this genuine platonic relationship that we just don’t see very often
- and the different representation we saw, Jam can speak but I guess chooses when to use her voice, but in the mean time communicates via sign language and how her family learned so she could actively communicate was just so encouraging
- and of course the big hunt, i enjoyed the final wrap up of this event, it brings light to very real issues in this world and it’s very sad that these situations can be this close to home.
I just appreciate everything Emezi brings to their books and would definitely recommend this quick read

Graphic: Child abuse
There are no specific details but it’s insinuated that a child is a victim of abuse within a household.
