The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo
5.0
I read and listened to this book. The audiobook was great for the pronunciation of many of the names, phrases in other languages and tunes to song parts.
This book takes place in Spain when the Spanish Inquisition is still fully active and going after Jews, Protestants, and anyone thought to consort with the devil. To me the story was about changing your fate and creating your own future under the guise of being about a scullery maid who accidentally exposed her magic and used that to escape her life of drudgery and a future of physical pain.
The main character of Luzia is a well developed character that you want to root for. Santangel is both creepy and sympathetic. I stayed up far too late into the wee hours of the morning to finish this book because I hard to find out the fate of the characters and couldn’t leave them hanging in limbo on the page.
This is the 3rd book by Leigh Bardugo I’ve read and she is quickly becoming a favorite author. This is another one of her books I will be buying a hard copy of.
