These Our Monsters: The English Heritage Collection of New Stories Inspired by Myth & Legend by Paul Kingsnorth, Graeme Macrae Burnet, Fiona Mozley

4.0

Always hard to rate, but I’m rating this anthology for the best of its stories, rather than an aggregate of them all. Unlike its companion book [b:Eight Ghosts|41964442|Eight Ghosts The English Heritage Book of New Ghost Stories|Rowan Routh|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1537702750l/41964442._SY75_.jpg|57172375] this also has a highly entertaining afterword on the folklore of English Heritage sites, the first 8 being the basis for the stories included. The eponymous first story by Edward Carey is a fabulous piece of writing, and some following also come close. Only one I found dull. Also has great illustrations by [a:Clive Hicks-Jenkins|966035|Clive Hicks-Jenkins|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png].
