Thérèse Desqueyroux by François Mauriac
5.0
I was in the mood to reread this book and I'm still struck by the beautifully terrible story of a woman suffocating under loneliness and the oppression of tradition. It's still remarkable how sympathetically Thérèse is portrayed despite flouting her role as wife and mother. She's described as a "monster," but she's a monster we're meant to love.
Aside from the content, which I find immensely relatable, this book is full of beautiful imagery. It's just pleasing to read despite the melancholy it leaves behind.
Would love to read it in the original French one day.
