The Graduate by Charles Webb

3.0

Really I’d rate it 2.5 but you can’t give 2.5s so I decided to be nice and round it up to 3. Why did I round it up and not down? Because the majority of the book I thoroughly enjoyed. Webb employs the use of heavy dialogue to convey the personalities of the characters instead of reams and reams of description which I personally enjoy (of course, if you dislike dialogue with minimal description then you’d hate this book). Also, the plot was suspenseful in a non-stressful way; I was eager to know what happens next and how Benjamin’s affair evolves (or devolves) and where he ends up in terms of general life decisions.

Unfortunately, this is why the book has been dropped to a 3 star rating which would actually be 2.5 if the option was available. The ending was underwhelming and disappointing. The plot development seemed rushed and abandoned. Why was he suddenly crashing a wedding and so adamant to marry Elaine? Yes, the boy is lost and most likely mentally unstable but it just seemed like he went 0-100 real quick. I would have liked more development in this section of the book or if not that, then the ending to have been extended and explored a bit more of what happened after the bus started moving.

Overall, I enjoyed 85-90% book but that remaining 10-15% was disappointing which is annoying to say the least.
