THE WHOREHOUSE: take a ride into Nairobi's night life by NJOKI KAMANDE, NJOKI KAMANDE

3.0

"The Whorehouse" by Njoki Kamande delves into the complex and intricate lives of its characters against the backdrop of Ngari's bustling Nairobi nightclub, Mikasa Bar and Grill. The protagonist, Ngari, owns this vibrant establishment, known for hosting at least 40 prostitutes and becoming a favoured spot for those seeking their services.

At the centre of the narrative is Ngari's turbulent marriage to Teresa, a devout Christian who contributes generously to the church despite the strain in her relationship with Ngari. The plot takes a dark turn when a woman is found dead in Teresa's home, initially thought to be a suicide but later confirmed as murder. The story unfolds in a gripping manner, revealing the cracks in Ngari and Teresa's marriage, marked by infidelity, secrets, and a looming divorce.

Teresa’s brother, Philip, a recovering heroin addict, and their mother, Watabi, contribute additional layers to the family dynamics, adding depth to the exploration of relationships. The narrative also introduces Simiyu, Ngari’s confidant tasked with covering up his boss’s darker deeds, leading to a moral struggle within himself.

The author weaves a compelling tale that addresses numerous sensitive themes, including infidelity, rape, suicide, murder, blended families, alcoholism, drug addiction, gender-based violence, and police brutality. While some chapters may feel drawn out with excessive explanations, Njoki Kamande’s debut novel showcases impressive character development and a well-fitted cast to the overall narrative.

One noteworthy aspect is the portrayal of Mueni, a whore with a troubled past, navigating her way through the challenges of working at Mikasa Bar and Grill. Her character undergoes significant growth, evolving from a victim of circumstance to a woman taking control of her life.

In one intriguing aspect, Ngari’s comparison of himself to Jesus introduces a unique element to the storyline, offering readers a glimpse into the character’s psyche and motivations. This bold exploration of complex themes is both a strength and a potential point of contention for readers, as the narrative takes on a more didactic tone in its later chapters.

Despite occasional stretches, Njoki Kamande‘s debut novel shines with well-developed characters and unexpected plot twists. The author navigates a complex web of emotions, relationships, and societal challenges, keeping readers engaged with notable cliffhangers and an unexpected ending. For its bold exploration of difficult themes and the author’s commendable storytelling, “The Whorehouse” deserves a 3-star rating. Kamande’s debut promises a promising future in the literary world.
