Lanny by Max Porter
5.0
Grief is the Thing with Feathers completely blew me away when I read it in 2016...I would go as far as to say it's a perfect book, so I was a little nervous when I picked this up as I wanted it to be just as good. I'm so happy to say that Max Porter has done it again and I think this is even better than his debut. Lanny completely sucked me in and I couldn't help but devour it in one sitting (which I think is the perfect way to read this book). Each character came alive within a few sentences, and the world Porter created was so vivid I just lost myself in it for a few hours. The prose is gorgeous but not in an overtly flowery way--in fact, it's sometimes crass and filthy. Porter is truly a master of language, blending the beautiful with the ugly, and creating something painfully human and real. There's so much to unpack in this small novel and it's truly impressive just how much Porter has managed to squeeze in here without it feeling rushed or crammed. It's just perfect and I think Max Porter is a writer to be intensely excited about.
