Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
5.0
Ready Player One is unlike any other book I have read so far. I highly enjoyed how Ernest Cline was able to come up with an entire world of his own and make it actually believable. I overall liked the way the main character, Wade or Parzival, told the story and his sense of humor. On top of it being a story about a cool contest inside a virtual world, it also had the undertone of just where our current world could be heading. If you're a fan of video games and 80's pop culture, this book is definitely for you. I can actually say I learned more about the 80's than I already knew.
I found some things to be predictable, but this I was willing to overlook because every book has a little bit of that. The thing I felt was hard to overlook was the segments in the book where I felt like the characters were just repeating themselves for an entire paragraph before it got to what was actually happening. I noticed this more towards the end of the book when I was just so excited to figure out who would win and how they won, which I found slightly frustrating. That being said, the good way outweighed the frustrating, so I'll get to those parts next. And honestly, it wasn't big enough for me to really care that much.
I really enjoyed how real this type of future felt, no matter how depressing it was. Technology seems to genuinely be taking over our lives, and this felt like a way that could be what happens in real life. I also really agreed with the quote from USA Today on the cover that says "Enchanting...Willy Wonka meets the Matrix." It really felt that way to me because of how Halliday made a contest to award someone everything (except for a few things) that he possessed. It was a really fun and unique idea for a story to center around, but not completely revolve around. I also really liked the characters that Cline brought to the party and the villains he made that seemed real with realistic motives.
I can't say much more without giving some major spoilers, so I will have to leave it at that. If you are looking for a good read that will hopefully be made into a good movie, I would highly recommend Ready Player One!
