There were many reasons NOT to love Time Loops & Meet Cutes. So, check out my Top 5 Reasons to read this book!
#1 Unique time loop concept execution.
The time loops brings about excellent and endless possibilities for Noelle!
I enjoyed the story concept that reminds me of Groundhog's Day, Sliding Doors, 21 First Dates, and those with time-traveling themes. Sometimes, I got frustrated, like Noelle, since the loop doesn't want to end, and it can get frustratingly repetitive. Successful in making readers relate that the loop's novelty lost its luster at some point. So, both Noelle (and I) now want to find out how to end the loop - not because we want the story to end but because we want to progress to Noelle (and move on to the story!).
#2 Captivating storytelling with many plot twists
I am constantly amazed at how the author can evolve and keep things fresh enough for readers like me to revisit and see how far she has come. (I have read and reviewed her previous book, Love, Lies & Cherry Pie, in the past.) It seems heartbreaking that the story doesn't only revolve around Noelle but also Cam and the rest of the people in Noelle's world. The effects are startling and gratifying at times.
#3 dynamic character development
The character development is spot on and works due to the many "do-overs" for all the characters. I liked how Noelle was smart enough to start changing things to see what magical system was going on with her inability to push on to her day. It was frustrating that the system doesn't have a retention button, so each day starts from zero or nothing, and Noelle had to bring up things repeatedly. But without these many "experimental trials," I believe Noelle would not have attempted any of the crazy, outlandish, and sometimes crazy actions/decisions she had to try to get out of the loop or even try to meet people or see "outside her capsuled world." She wouldn't rediscover her connections. The loop made Noelle a far braver character with all the loops. As a stubborn character at the start, Noelle had to be "knocked some senses" to discover more about her capabilities as a person and maybe as a partner.
#4 Asian foodscapes galore
The different foods eaten and mentioned in the book showcase how Toronto is a melting pot of cultures, with Asian foods a strong contender to this North American continent, from Filipino halo-halo and ube pandesal to Korean bibimbop and spicy Tteokbokki to Chinese dumplings to Taiwanese boba milk teas. A few of these foods are critical memory triggers for the main characters, which is so true with many people - that was very successful in pulling memories and experiences out of Noelle and Cam.
#5 Sneaky grandma in the mix
In all the craziness of the story, I loved Grandma's cunning and sly matchmaking skills. Without spoiling anything, she comes at the best time of the book (start and middle) and ends with a "mic drop" revelation at the very end. It doesn't get better than this! (I couldn't immediately confirm, but I had my suspicions. However, how she did it and how things "exploded" in the end. It stumped me when I read it, and after that, it was a trainwreck of emotions that I did not see coming. Yes, I CRIED TEARS OF JOY in the end.)
Overall, I highly highly enjoyed Time Loops & Meet Cutes!
It was something unexpected and intriguing that made me glue myself to it from start to finish. I was constantly wondering what the ending would be! It reminded me of a Choose Your Own Adventure, but in this case, Noelle decided all the random choices to (a) try to get out of the loop and (b) still try to maintain the possible best outcome of that decision. I highly enjoyed Cam, even if we don't get much information in his head. Still, when we do, it is fully loaded with clues, emotions (deja vu feelings), and hope (something good is coming or has happened?! maybe?), and I was rooting for them both!
