The Girl Who Fell From the Sky by Emma Carey

4.0

I very much enjoyed the writing style of this book and I found Emma's story of her injury and recovery very interesting.

What knocked this book down to 4 stars for me was what I can only think of as the "self-help" aspects of the book. They felt a bit tacked on, and they got repetitive. I found myself skimming those bits frequently.

Another thing that I've been thinking about quite a bit was Emma's mantra of "If you can, you must." The more I thought about it, the more I found it lacked a degree of nuance. While I have never had a traumatic injury, I do live with a chronic pain condition. There are some things I can't do on certain days, but even on days when I can do them, I might not want to do them because I know that I might be sacrificing my ability to do something I want to do more at a later date. If I didn't know this about myself and my condition, reading "if you can, you must" so many times might have had the power to shift me into a shame mindset around my condition. I think I'd much rather have seen it framed along the lines of "will I regret not doing this if this is the last opportunity for me to do it?" While that's not as simple and pithy as "if you can, you must" I think it covers some of the nuance I felt was lacking in the mantra.

Overall, though I very much enjoyed this book.
