The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andrić
4.0
The novel is rather a net of stories woven around the Bridge than a pure and classic narrative. Characters change with the flow of time and only the narrator himself and the bridge remain in the reader's view. Though both of them remain either talkative or immobile thoughout the whole novel, which is the most unfortunate combination for the development of a story, they both manage to intrigue and keep the reader's attention, from the very beginning till the very end.
- Well, there is a piece of lie detected: I really got stuck a few times, when the narrator got too philosophical or when the action became less graphic (and cruel). -
It's really a shame that I cannot read the book in its original language, the beauty of which could redeem all sins.
