If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn
4.0
Terrifying start as we watch Aliya and her family escape the Taliban. Her brother has friends in high places, though things are not quite as they seem. When we next meet Aliya in England she has a chance encounter with Dan, a young boy who suspects his father is caught up in things he shouldn't be.
Together, the two end up trying to prove a man's innocence when he is accused of plotting terrorist activities.
Timely novel, which would certainly get readers thinking about terrorism, corruption and how we live with fear.
This was a novel that gripped from the start, though the rational part of me read with horror that there was any possibility of anyone getting away with the things described here.
From this point of view the novel's end resolves matters clearly. I can't help but feel though that in reality things would have been very different.
