Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood

2.0

I have a chest cold, so I'm not quite clearheaded, so sorry in advance if this review doesn't make much sense.
That said, my chest cold is also the main reason why I finished this book. It wasn't necessarily bad, but it wasn't for me. Honestly, it felt a little like a YA version of [b:Magic Lessons|50892349|Magic Lessons (Practical Magic, #0.1)|Alice Hoffman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1593355938l/50892349._SX50_.jpg|75786942]. It wasn't really original in any way, but I guess for those that like YA, it'll fit great. There's a love-triangle that, to me, seemed thrown in there just for the sake of having one. There's sibling rivalry as well as mean girls.

I marked this book as historical fiction, and it kinda is. It's got horse drawn carriages and corsets and a male-dominated world. This world is a lot more so than it was, though, which is part of the historical fiction. And witches is something everyone know's real, because they used to rule the world.
I did like how Dubai was mentioned as a trendsetting and free country. It was an interesting twist.
One thing I didn't like, was how the author kept using the word ''invalid'' in the beginning. The only reason I can forgive it, is because that's the word used for disabled people at that time, but I'm really not a fan of it.

I don't think I'll be continuing on with the series. As I said, the main reason I finished this book was because I couldn't really do much else than listen to audio books int he last 24 hours. If not, and if the book had been any longer, I'd probably have DNFed it.
