Reciprocal: America's History: The Saddest Story Never Told by N. D. Brennan, Honesty Brennan and N. Brennan

5.0

Reciprocal is one of those books that makes you feel some very complex emotions. When I read the book blurb, the storyline of “what if white people were slaves?” was so intriguing to me. I just knew I would enjoy reading about white people being dehumanized and treated like chattel.
As I read the book, there was a complex duality of emotions. On the one hand, part of me was talking out loud to the “caukers,” as the book calls the white people, saying “how do you like it? Doesn’t feel so great, does it?” While the human part of me winced and cringed and was angry at the way the caukers were being treated.
Reciprocal is the perfect title for this book. You can feel the reciprocal of each emotion in a sort of boomerang way. It is definitely an eye-opening book that allows you to see slavery from both sides of the evil coin.
I highly recommend this book for everyone, no matter what color you may be. It has the potential to lead to discussions that can begin to heal if readers keep their minds open.
